Smooth, Strong, & Secure

At TYMETAL, we offer several types of cantilever gates to suit your operational needs and meet industry standards. What makes our cantilevered sliding gates the best security gate solution are our high standards for lasting performance, strength, and heavy-duty use.

We offer three varieties of Cantilever Slide Gates, as follows:

  • Heavy Duty: single clear openings up to 30′; bi-parting/double to 60′.
  • Structural: single clear openings up to 40′; bi-parting/double to 80′.
  • Box Frame: single clear openings up to 60′; bi-parting/double to 120′.

Cantilever Slide Gate Applications

Wondering if a cantilever slide gate is the right choice for your project, application, or environment? The cantilever gate design is counter-balanced to allow the gate to smoothly slide out in a linear motion, closing an opening beyond its vertical support. It’s the perfect solution in environments where a large opening is necessary. Industrial grade cantilever slide gate systems are ideal for locations ranging from the following:

Cantilever Slide Gate Features

TYMETAL’s complete line of durable cantilever gates is designed to close single openings up to 60 feet. When doubled, it will open up to 120 feet, making it a versatile solution for a wide variety of applications.

Additional features include:

  • Designed and built to order to suit your specific project needs.
  • Top track and top gate frame members are keyed to fully interlock with each other and then welded to form a one-piece composite structure.
  • Adjustable stainless steel or galvanized cable cross-bracing along the entire gate length for added strength and rigidity.
  • Provide double or single-track cantilever gates, depending on your project’s requirements.
  • Truck assemblies are designed for slide gate use and are tested under extreme load and weather conditions.
  • Enjoy a five-year warranty on the W4 (4 wheel) or S8 (8 wheel) truck assemblies as a standard feature.
  • Self-aligning sealed lubricant ball-bearing wheels.
  • Each cantilever slide gate includes gap protectors and guide roller covers to protect against entrapment.

Cantilever Slide Gate Applications

Are you wondering if a cantilever slide gate is the right choice for your project, application, or environment? TYMETAL’s cantilever gate designs include a semi-enclosed track, ball bearing truck assemblies, and 50% counterbalance (rather than 40%) to allow the gate to smoothly slide open and closed, spanning single clear opening widths up to 60 feet wide. No ground track, wheels, or overhead support is necessary. This offers an ideal solution where larger openings are needed and grade conditions are challenging (example: road crown for drainage, slope conditions, uneven grades, etc.).

Industrial grade cantilever slide gate systems are ideal for locations ranging from airports, military bases, railroads, public service buildings, chemical plants, border stations, and more.

No matter what the setting, choosing an automatic cantilever slide gate over an automated swing gate offers three primary advantages, including:

  • Safer operation with less chance of the gate interfering or making contact with vehicles or objects.
  • Lower overall costs with an automated gate design, which eliminates the need for additional operators and access control components.
  • Reduced maintenance and upkeep because a sliding gate path requires less work to maintain a debris-free path that is clear in the snow.

Frequently Asked Questions

TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing cantilever slide gates, we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.

What are the advantages of a Cantilever Slide Gate over other slide gate systems?

Cantilever Slide Gates can span single clear opening widths up to 60 feet (double/bi-parting up to 120 feet) without the need for ground wheels or tracks or overhead support. They are more forgiving relative to road grade variations than slide gates requiring a ground track. They are efficient, secure, and often the most cost-effective way to span a vehicular opening.

Which is better: an Aluminum Cantilever Slide Gate or a Steel Cantilever Slide Gate?

Aluminum is the better choice due to its lighter weight, strength, and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. Even larger aluminum systems slide easily.

Steel Cantilever Slide Gates are too heavy to span larger clear openings. They most often have exposed tracks (usually the top round primary pipe frame member of the gate panel) and function poorly in ice and snow conditions. When operated, due to weight, the force to move them requires heavier duty gate operators than those needed for aluminum gates — and those operators experience a shorter life span.

Steel pipe frame gate panels tend to rust and eventually break at welded points due to excessive stress, requiring much more maintenance during their life cycle than an aluminum gate.

Can I use a Cantilever Slide Gate for my particular application? What considerations need to be made?

Do I have the space? The overall length of a cantilever slide gate panel is 1-1/2 times the clear opening width. When the gate is in the open position, that amount of storage space is needed to one side of the opening or the other. For example, a 20-foot clear opening width requires a cantilever slide gate panel to have an overall length of 30 feet. In the open position, it requires 30 feet of storage space.

If there is not sufficient space to one side of the clear opening or the other, what are my options? Cantilever Slide Gates are available in double/bi-parting configurations (2 gate panels that meet in the center when closed). Depending on site conditions, unequal gate panels are also an option. For example, a bi-parting configuration with a 24-foot clear opening width can be spanned with two gate panels that span 12 feet each. Each of those gate panels would have an overall length of 18 feet, requiring 18 feet of storage on each side of the opening when in the open position.

What factors should I consider when buying a cantilever gate?

When choosing your cantilever gate, consider factors such as:

  • Site Conditions: A cantilever slide gate must be installed plumb and level, regardless of grade conditions. It should not be installed so that it slides one way or the other on its own. It should be set at least two inches above the highest elevation associated with the travel path of the gate.
  • Storage: When calculating how much space is needed for a cantilever slide gate, remember the overall length of the gate is 1-1/2 times the clear opening width. You need that amount of space to store the gate panel when in the open position.
  • Infill type: A cantilever gate is able to accept various infill materials (chain link fabric, decorative pickets, and other). Weight and density are the key factors that can impact a gate’s performance. Check with the manufacturer if you are considering heavy or dense materials.
  • Single or double-track configuration: Cantilever gates with openings 30 feet wide or shorter can use the more economical Heavy Duty single-track configuration. Cantilever slide gates with openings wider than 30 feet require the dual track Structural (up to 40 feet) or Box Frame Cantilever (up to 60 feet).
  • Gate height: While not as important as the gate’s opening width, a cantilever slide gate’s height will also influence your gate’s overall structure (Heavy Duty, Structural, or Box Frame). Height impacts the gate’s ability to withstand wind load and plays an important role in determining what infill materials, hardware, and structure will be suitable.
  • Gate weight: Most cantilever gate weights don’t exceed 2,000 pounds. When a gate weighs more than a ton, the installer must consider which gate structure and support elements are most appropriate.
